The Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offenses Unit’s perseverance in combating the scourge of Crimes Against Women and Children has paid off.
This comes after the Butterworth Regional Magistrate’s Court sentenced 27-year-old Andile Mokolo to 20 years in prison for the rape of a 67-year-old woman on Tuesday, 15 March 2022.
The sentence stems from an incident that occurred on Sunday, April 9, 2017 in Ngxaxa Village, Dutywa.
The victim is said to have been sleeping alone in her home when she noticed a man standing next to her bed, strangling and raped her. The man entered through the window.
The incident was reported to the police, and the suspect was tracked down and arrested the next day.
Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu, Acting Amathole District Commissioner, praised the members for their quick response, which resulted in the arrest. “I’d like to thank the investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Siyabulela Yenana, for his thorough investigation,” Brigadier Xakavu said.
