Stirling High School Grade 11 learner Matthew Moss gave exceptional performances in the Multi Disability category at the Olympic trials in Qeberha, 7 – 12 April.
Born without his lower left arm, Matt is classified to compete in the S9 class. At this gala, he competed against classes S1 up to S13.
Two years ago at his first SA Senior Champs, he won just one medal. So phenomenal was his recent outing. Matthew medaled in six of the seven events he entered, including setting two new South African S9 class records in the 100-metre butterfly and 200-metre individual medley.
His medals included: Bronze – 50m freestyle, Bronze – 100m freestyle, Gold – 50m backstroke, Silver – 100m backstroke, Silver – 100m butterfly and Bronze – 200m individual medley.
Although he didn’t attain Olympic qualifying times, “there’s no doubt he will in the future,” Coach Lynn Shone said. “Aquanova Swim School, his coach and team are thrilled with his achievements. The future is his to pick,” Shone added.
