Apologetic EC Health MEC ‘under fire’

By Khuthala Nandipha

Eastern Cape Health MEC Sindiswa Gomba has apologised and claims that she was misunderstood.

Gomba was overheard saying “andidikwe” which means “I have had it” during a virtual Technical media briefing on Covid 19 with Health Minister Dr Zwelini Mkhize and 8 of her counterparts on Tuesday.

Gomba said she has noted the uproar over the incident and claims that she said “andidikwe” because she was feeling hot after finishing her presentation, and it came across as her being fed up or irritated with the briefing.

She has since officially apologised to Minister Mkhize. However, many South Africans have lashed out at her and took up to social media campaigning for her immediate removal, claiming that she has been losing the fight against Corona from day one.

“I understand the impression that was created when I said “andidikwe” ndiyatsha (I am on fire) during the briefing. At the time of saying that I was moving away from the laptop and taking off the doek”

“I am committed in the fight against this pandemic,” she said.

Department spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo added that the MEC was simply exhausted.

“She forgot to mute her microphone when she said she was irritated or uncomfortable with the warm attire since the early hours of the morning.”

The Economic Freedom Fighters in the province has also called for Gomba to be dismissed and replaced with a competent person.

“She lacks the necessary capacity and patience to lead in the fight against the virus. We need a young and energetic leader. Dr Mkhize must invoke Section 100 of the Constitution and take over leadership in this EC department,” said Yazini Tetyana, provincial chairperson of the EFF.
