With the festive season looming, beachgoers are urged to respect the ocean and not swim too deep.
This comes after Buffalo City Metro lifeguards tried in vain to rescue a drowning person yesterday evening at Eastern Beach.
According to BCM’s media release, the lifeguards were walking home after finishing duty when they spotted somebody going under the water.
“They ran back to try and rescue but were unsuccessful. Our teams are still on the lookout,” media report reads.
They further went on to urge people who are missing a loved one to approach their nearest police station.
They added that they are, “calling on beach goers to swim within demarcated areas where lifeguards are operating and not to swim after hours or whilst intoxicated.”
Furthermore, parents are encouraged to take their children for swimming lessons and always supervise them at the beach.
