Mdantsane and Duncan Village did not have a bleak start to 2022 after losing their homes and belongings in the floods.
This was after they awoke to find powerful streams of water flowing through their informal settlements, claiming several lives and leaving others homeless.
Human Settlements Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, Deputy Minister Pam Tshwete, EC MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe, and Deputy Executive Mayor Princess Faku, paid a visit to the city on Thursday, 13 January 2022, to assess recent flood damages.
According to the ministry’s announcement, the survivors would be relocated to readily available temporary shelters.
The floods affected and displaced over 800 people, the majority of whom sought refuge in community halls. Seven people were killed in the flash floods.
