The Gonubie community came together to clean up their beach on Saturday, 19 February.
The event was organized by Sharlayne Foster on behalf of the Rate Payers Association.
“We saw the need for this to be done regularly. People come from out of town, have parties on the beach and leave a mess behind. We are actually trying to build our beach up and to get the blue status again,” Sharylene said.
Sharylene has lived in Gonubie for 15 years and said that the place has changed over the year.
Even though the toilets and boardwalk have been vandalised, it can all be fixed.
People of all ages were in attendance, from 6 years to 80 years, instead of their regular Saturday plans like going for park runs, walking dogs and general house chores.
Resident, John Brown who is a fisherman and has lived in Gonubie for over 40 years, was among those who showed up.
“The community has changed over the years. You wouldn’t find this kind of mess years back. As a possible tourist destination Gonubie could be a gem, we have a lot of things to attract tourists.”
200 black bags were donated by Space Makers Kings mall.
