More than 100 learners hospitalised

About 120 learners from Ikamvalesizwe Combined School in Kenton-on-Sea, outside Port Alfred, had to be rushed to Port Alfred Hospital yesterday afternoon due to stomach-relate issues.

Departmental Spokesperson Mali Mtima says, ‘It is alleged that these learners complained of stomach aches and vomiting after having had a meal that is served as part of the School Nutrition Program during break time at their school.”

Providing the learners, teachers and parents with psychosocial services, the Department of Basic Education, Departmental officials from the district, provincial office were on site to monitor the situation.

“The department is monitoring the situation in collaboration with the department of health. Currently, all officials and parents are still waiting for medical reports on what led to the situation,” Mali says.

A statement will be released in due course of any new developments.
